“Flourish” by Martin Seligman

Happiness can be analyzed into three different elements. Positive emotion, engagement, and meaning.

Positive emotion is what we feel: pleasure, rapture, ecstasy, warmth, comfort, etc. The “pleasant life”

Engagement is about flow. The loss of consciousness during an engaging activity. The “engaged life”

The pursuit of engagement and the pursuit of pleasure are often solitary, solipsistic endeavors. The Meaning mail Life consists in belonging to and serving something that you believe is bigger than the self: religion, political parties, or the family.

PERMA: positive emotion, engagement, meaning, positive relationships, and accomplishment.

Briefs about an adversity cause the consequent feelings (ABC). Emotions don’t follow inexorably from external events but from what you think about those events, and you can actually change what you think.

Positive relationships, meaning, and accomplishment have both objective and subjective components: not jus how you feel about your relationships, but how these people feel about you; not just your sense of meaning but the degree to which you actually belong to and actually serve something larger than you are; not just your pride in what you have done, but whether you have actually met your goals, and where these goals stand in their impact on the people you care about and on the world.
