Pulled out some more Rules of a Gentleman. Short pieces of advice like this are good reminders of what our ideal self would be if such a thing existed.
- Never underestimate the capacity of those close to you to betray you.
- Shame is the useless practice of making other people’s problems our own.
- You don’t need to do great things to be happy.
- There’s nothing so great you can’t lose and come back from.
- The only way money can buy happiness is if you spend it on the people you love.
- You don’t need better organization. You need to get rid of your useless shit. (See “Live Like You’re Dying”)
- Obstacle is inspiration.
- Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck.
- Playing it safe is dangerous.
- Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.
- Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names.
- Be happy with less. Aspire for more.
- You can be an asshole, just don’t be a boring asshole.
- If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original (See #2 in “The Innovators” about ramming original ideas down their throats)
- All of your troubles seem so important today. Just give it time.
- A man who views the world the same as fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.
- You’ll never know how much you can ask for until you ask for too much.
- Rejection will never hurt for as long as regret.
- You can’t afford to wait on happiness.
- Never waste your time on a woman who doesn’t value yours.
- Learn something today.
- Appreciation is more important than achievement.
- There is nothing more valuable than happiness.
- Every day, do something that scares you just a little. Get your heart racing.
- Happiness is a skill.
- Today is a brand new day. Just like yesterday should have been.
- Life becomes easier when you learn to accept an apology you never got.
- Five good friends will do more for your happiness than all the riches in the world.
- If you’re asking someone for money, wear a tie.
- If you don’t like the rules, make new ones.
- Examine what is said, not him who speaks.
